I grew up a farmer’s son, surrounded by the fertile fields of western Kansas. The years I spent farming and ranching with my family instilled in me a dedication to my job, even when times are tough. Medicine is currently facing some obstacles, including healthcare reform, decreased Medicare reimbursements, and an ever increasing flow of paperwork. Despite these challenges, I am optimistic about the future of Family Medicine and our academy.
I am deeply honored to be considered for the secretary position in the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians. I have been associated with the academy since medical school, but my participation increased two years ago when I became a member of the KAFP Board of Directors, for District 7. As a board member, I have been involved in the hiring of a new lobbyist, pharmaceutical company involvement in CME, and meeting with state representatives.
As on officer of KAFP, I would focus on the upcoming issues facing us involving healthcare reform, EMR placement in our clinics, and the upcoming physician-shortage in our specialty. I would do my best to ensure Family Medicine’s position at the forefront of the upcoming discussions regarding healthcare reform.
I once had a friend warn me against going into Family Medicine. He stated that the breadth of knowledge was too wide for any physician to grasp, and that being a family physician was "just different" than being a specialist. As family practitioners, I feel that the very things that make us different than other specialties are also the things that position us to be leaders in healthcare reform. My time as a rural physician has given me the breadth of experience, and leadership responsibilities to handle this position. I would appreciate your consideration. Thank you.

We are in exciting times as the Kansas Academy and family medicine are transforming to meet the demands of our society. It will be important over the next several years to maintain our core values and strengthen our position within the health care system. I have the passion and skills to serve as an officer that represents our Academy. A member of the AAFP since 1992, I have served in many different leadership roles including FMIG President, resident member on several AAFP committees, District Director to the Board of Directors, Foundation trustee, KAFP Foundation president for three years, KAFP Governmental Advocacy Committee chairperson for five years and charter member of the Steering Committee for the AAFP-Foundation Family Medicine Philanthropic Consortium for three years.
My main objective, if elected secretary, is advocating for our specialty and our patients, especially in Topeka. Additional goals include working towards implementing the patient centered medical home that patients, business and government leaders understand and demand. Attracting student interest is crucial to our specialty’s future, and I will assist in developing a student/resident pathway to identify and cultivate our future leaders. I will promote fiscal responsibility ensuring that we are spending our resources on programs that fulfill our strategic mission.
My unfailing desire to serve our specialty and our Academy motivates me to seek your support for KAFP secretary and the opportunity to promote our specialty.

Dear KAFP Membership,
I want your vote for KAFP Delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates. I have served as alternate or delegate since 2002 and strive to serve the interests of our state chapter at the national level. Family medicine and the practice of medicine faces many challenges, some old and some new, but I feel we are at a stage where changes in our health care system are expected and we must be ready to contribute to the discussion.
We all have our own expectations of what these changes will bring to our ability to care for our patients and our own families. I want to be sure that Kansas family physicians remain a vital part of the AAFP Congress of Delegates deliberations as this process develops.
I have appreciated the opportunity to work for my colleagues and KAFP members and hope you will allow me to continue to do so.

First I would like to thank the Nominating Committee for my nomination. I would be very pleased to follow in the prestigious footsteps of Kansas leadership at the AAFP. We are proud to have Bob Moser as a candidate to the AAFP Board this year. We will be working diligently to make his election successful. As many of you know during my year as President of the KAFP and since I have been working hard to advocate for you during this time of Health Reform. In particular, I have been working toward reform of Family Medicine and the vehicle has been the Patient Centered Medical Home. I became involved in the state level movement of this through the Kansas Health Policy Authority. I continue to work with them as the physician liaison for the KAFP and Primary Care physicians. The work for health reform has really hit the national agenda and the AAFP has taken a leading role in the PCMH movement. As your Alternate Delegate at last year’s Congress of Delegates this was high on our priority list. There are many other highly charged issues in this era of health care reform, workforce issues and the new national push toward HIT/HIE. I will be ready to work hard to represent you and the KAFP at the national level. The history of Kansas leadership at the AAFP is well respected and the path ahead has been paved. I plan to respect those that blazed the trail so that we can work to open new roads to the future of Family Medicine. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Mike Kennedy, MD, FAAFP

John Feehan, MD, Olathe, KS - District 1 Candidate Statement

It is with excitement that I run for a district director position within the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians.
During 22 years of providing family medical care with Olathe Family Practice, I have had the opportunity to be small group employee, small group shareholder, and employee of a hospital subsidiary. I have worked as full-time family physician, and Family Medicine Residency site director for the KU-Olathe Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Clinic.
I enjoy the privilege of providing care in the nursery, hospital, office, nursing home and the occasional home visits for my hospice and other home-bound patients. I have been the father/coach/team physician for my kid’s sports from pre-school soccer through high school rugby. I now have the quiet satisfaction of watching 2 of my children test the waters of considering becoming physicians.
With the many hats worn, I have strived to promote quality, cost effective, ethical health care for my patients, and have been a strong community advocate for the specialty of Family Medicine.
Participating as a district director for the KAFP is an opportunity to continue to be an advocate for our collective patients, and our specialty.
I look forward to this opportunity.

I have lived in Kansas, essentially all my life; Undergrad at Wichita State, Graduate School at KU, Med School and Residency at KU; Practiced in the Greater KC area since 1975; Board certified and recertified (multiple times!)
Started a group practice in Shawnee Mission in 1979 with 2 other KUFP trained doctors; grew to a 6 person group, providing all primary care services including OB. Currently am solo, practicing mainly Geriatrics in all settings, but continuing hospital work, and limited office work.
Also continued working during off hours in various ER’s, until "grandfathered" into EM Board Certification in 1985. "Retired" from ER work in 2001.
Have always had an interest in organized professional activities. During 1st Year of Medical School, I joined the AMA. Knowing even then I would become a "real doctor", ie, Family Physician, I tried to join AAFP, but at that time there was not an avenue for student membership.
I remember well going to KAFP meetings all over the state, in 1975-1980 with an older Physician Dr Larry Leigh, who helped develop the KAFP and was one of Shawnee Mission Medical Centers founding primary care physicians. Actually I believe he recruited me to be his chauffeur as he would generally "nap" as I drove to Salina, Dodge City, Manhattan, Wichita, or the many other meeting sites.
I was elected into the "Presidential" sequence of KAFP as Secretary in 1983, becoming President in 1986. Due to Family and Practice concerns re extensive out of state travel, I never became active in AAFP.
After KAFP service, I became active with the Kansas Medical Society, moving into the Presidency there in 1993. I continue to serve on their Executive Committee, as an Alternate Delegate to the AMA, and as the Chairman on the Organized Medical Staff Committee.
State wise, I am the current President of the Kansas Medical Directors Association and the current Chair of the Health Care Stabilization Board of Governors since 2003. KAFP has appointed me to the Carrier Advisory Committee, which advises our WPS contractor about issues for Family Medicine.
Nationally, I also am on the Governing Council of the AMA-OMSS; I was also nominated by AAFP and appointed by the Secretary of HHS to the Practicing Physicians Advisory Council to CMS, which meets quarterly in DC.
In summary, I have a long history of Kansas Family Medicine practice in a variety of settings; I have also served in many areas of organized medicine, and would be pleased to again serve KAFP, in whatever way I can, especially in this exciting time of potential epic changes nationally in our health care system.

When I was asked to run for election on the board, my first reaction was to hesitate. After thinking about it, I decided to go ahead and run only because I think I can add a different perspective to some of the questions we have in family medicine. I love being a family doctor and all that it entails. I think our main benefit to our patients is our personal contact with our patients and the relationships that we build. What I see happening in a lot of situations nationally is a decrease in this personal contact, more is being done by e-mail and fax and I am old fashioned enough that I do not believe that is the way we should practice medicine. I know that philosophy goes against the general grain that is being put out there at this point and, probably, I am a dinosaur, but I feel that the only way we can maintain the integrity of family medicine is through personal contact. I do not think the new systems make us better doctors. I think good doctors will be good doctors, no matter what system they use, and the bad doctors will be bad doctors, no matter what system they use.
I am sure that what I said has immediately put me to the negative in a lot of people’s eyes, and that is okay. If I am elected to the board, I will serve in the best way I know how, to keep family medicine strong in the future.

I have been a practicing Family Physician and clinical researcher for nearly 20 years. In my practice I have two partners who have been past presidents of the Kansas Medical Society. I have served as a MSSC delegate to Kansas Medical Society on a number of occasions and have also had the opportunity to serve on the Legislative Committee and the Insurance Committee again as a member of the Medical Society of Sedgwick County. I have been in leadership through most of my life in academics and in my Church. In the latter I have international health care experience in Kazakhstan, India, Congo, and Central America, and sit on an international board with the focus of developing and restoring healthcare facilities and using technology to further the efforts of missions efforts in third world countries.
My family is the joy of my life with a wife and 3 of our own active children, and now the addition of 2 more, a 2 yr old boy and a 5 yr old girl adopted after 2 years of effort from Guatemala.
Within leadership, we bring our insights and our experiences. Should my peers so choose, I offer these for their service.

Dear Nominating Committee,
There are several reasons why I would like to be the District Director for district 3. The main reasons are giving back to the medical society and the state of Kansas and to be a good liaison for family physicians and other specialists and the community.
As for the first reason of giving back to the medical society and the state of Kansas, I have been blessed with Kansas Medical Scholarships when I was in medical school. It has helped me tremendously financially and I am very grateful for that. District 3, which has been my home for the last 13 years, has been supportive and friendly to family physicians. I want to continue to promote that and also the importance of family physicians in providing care and access of care to the community.
The second reason is to be a good liaison for family physicians, other specialist and the community. I have been trained in Wichita and have served in various fields as a family physician. I have worked and still work with the family practice residency program, in wound care and hyperbaric oxygen treatments, immediate care, emergency medicine, private practice and hospital medicine. With these backgrounds, I know most specialists and know what they think of family physicians, and also know most primary care physicians and their needs. They can help me to coordinate cooperation and help from the medical communities, governmental agencies and pharmaceutical companies. These experiences will give me the insight and knowledge to provide the bridge needed to rally all physicians to promote the KAFP mission of promoting access to and excellence in health care.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours truly,
Charlotte Lim, MD

I have been involved in the practice of medicine in Wichita, since I came from my native country of Colombia in 1970.
The first few years, after completing my family practice residency training at St. Joseph Medical Center and had been appointed a position as an ER physician in the same hospital, I was elected as the Kansas Delegate in the developing American Academy of Emergency Physicians from 1993-1999.
I continued to have involvement at the local, state, and national levels until I decided in 1986 to dedicate my efforts completely to my original training, Family Practice. Since then, I have practiced exclusively Family Medicine and have developed a lot of knowledge of the different aspects of my specialty at the local level but also around the State of Kansas. I wish to continue serving the Academy and the State of Kansas at any level I am called to serve and to give back a little of what they have given to me over the past 23 years.

Dear Selection Committee,
It is a great honor to be nominated for the Sedgwick County seat on the Board of Directors for the KAFP. As you know, I finished my residency at Wesley Family Practice in 1993, and have been practicing in Wichita ever since. Over the last 17 years, I have seen first hand the changes in medicine, and particularly the changes in the field of Family Practice. I feel very strongly that now, more than at any time in my career, it is important to be a participant in the changes that are to come.
It seems that we are all holding our breath to see what is going to happen to our medical system with the new presidential administration. Our field, Family Practice, is on the forefront of this change as the Medical Home concept is increasingly a part of the dialogue relating to medical reform. Yet, if as a specialty we do not exert our voice and educate our colleagues, patients, and government about the need for Family Practice to be at the center of the change, our chance to have a voice in medical reform may be lost. I hope that by participating on the Board of Directors I may have an active voice in the positive changes that are ahead.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Diane Steere, MD

My name is Cayle Goertzen and I am running for the District 5 Representative for the KAFP. I am currently in private practice in Belleville Kansas practicing full spectrum family practice including OB as well as many surgical procedures. My short time in private practice has shown me that there are many issues within medicine that we as primary care practitioners should be directly involved in changing. It is my intention to represent both the family physicians in my district as well as family physicians across the state to make sure that we are all involved in making and implementing these changes. Although this would be my first appointment at this level, I feel that I have the experience needed based on past committees that I have been involved with. I relish the opportunity to represent those in my district and my colleagues around the state to help shape the future of family medicine.

As a family physician in a community of 1500, I have learned that providing quality health care to my patients involves more than just providing direct patient care. It involves advocating at local, county, state and national levels, providing quality education and patient information, and helping to mentor future physicians who will one day serve my community and others around the state. While physicians can work individually on these goals, I believe we are more effective when we work as a team.
The KAFP has a long history of helping family physicians work together on these issues and has been key in shaping the health policy of our state. I was involved with the KAFP board of directors during residency and have participated with the legislative affairs committee while in private practice. I have now reached a point with my practice and family where I have time again to work more closely with the KAFP, and hope to do so in the role of district director.

I grew up a farmer’s son, working the dusty fields just south of Scott City. The years I spent farming and ranching with my family instilled in me a hard-working, positive outlook on life, which I have carried into my medical practice. We currently have some challenges facing us in medicine, including health care reform, waning Medicare reimbursements, and a sea of paperwork. Despite these challenges, I am optimistic about the future of Family Medicine and our academy.
I have enjoyed serving as District 7 Director for the past two years. There have been many important issues we’ve dealt with, including pharmaceutical involvement with CME, hiring a new lobbyist for KAFP, and meeting with state representatives to discuss the importance of Family Medicine and primary care.
I plan to focus on the upcoming medical reforms, making sure Family Medicine has a front-row seat in these discussions. I will continue to fight for the preservation of rural family physicians’ way of life, and for the institution of new technologies to assist us in patient care. As a rural practitioner, I’m also acutely aware of the upcoming physician-shortage in our specialty, and will continue to work with KU School of Medicine to address this issue.
I am deeply honored to be nominated, and would appreciate your support of my application to represent District 7 of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians. Thank you.

As a candidate for the District Director from District 7 in Southwest Kansas, I bring a great deal of energy and enthusiasm for the Kansas Academy and what we can accomplish. After completing my residencies in Portland, Oregon, I could have chosen to live anywhere in the world. My family and I picked Tribune, Kansas, for its progressive attitude and joyful spirit. I am privileged to work in one of the best frontier health care systems in the nation, but it has never been my goal to remain a doctor-in-the-box. While I treat my patients in keeping with the highest standards of excellence, I also strive to make the systems of care more effective and efficient for my partners and team members. The next step is to bring the successes of Greeley County to the larger arena and help to build a better environment for all practices. I have experience in both academic and rural settings and have also served as a Medical Director for a managed-care organization. I have first-hand experience with the Patient-Centered Medical Home model and a passion for seeing real health care reform in my lifetime that will benefit all of Kansas. I thank you for your confidence and your vote.

My role at KU is one of teaching medical students, primarily. I am the faculty advisor for the Family Medicine Interest Group and I direct the Family Medicine Clerkship. In these roles, I have many opportunities to tell students about the joy of practicing medicine as a family doctor.
I would appreciate the opportunity to continue serve the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians as a member of the Board of Directors. Thank you.

I'm interested in serving because I feel I can represent the University of Kansas - Wichita well given my close working relationship with Dr. Kellerman, Dr. Moser and the rest of the Department of Family and Community Medicine as well as Drs. Leu and Callaway. In my roles on various committees and now on the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education I am well informed of the issues facing KU - Wichita and can provide helpful insight to the BOD of the KAFP.
